5th September 2011 - Turkish DNS hack would never have hit the headlines if sites were protected with First Cyber Security’s website authentication product SOLID Authentication®
British Patent Pending security software could have prevented the effect of latest cyber attack to cause embarrassment to major corporate such as Betfair, UPS, The Telegraph, National Geographic and Acer
Woking, UK. 5th September 2011 - First Cyber Security, a UK based software company that supplies innovative and yet easy to use website authentication software has today stated that the Turkish hacker group that diverted traffic from a number of high profile websites would have been foiled if website authentication tools had been in operation.
Rod Pugh, Managing Director at First Cyber Security stated; “Had website authentication software been in use together with crowd sourcing technology, the websites targeted by this attack could have been aware of this within seconds, and within minutes, attempts to visit the affected sites could be redirected to safe harbour. This would have prevented the embarrassment and potential harm to the brands that a major attack like this causes. Had the hackers been intent on stealing rather than just trying to show the world how clever they are, customers could have had their identities stolen or been defrauded.”
Mr Pugh continued, “This isn’t new, the same people ran similar attacks on 4th, 12th and 20th August. The technology is available now to prevent this type of attack. When did we last see the headline ‘Bank foils thieves by locking front door’? The analogy is real, it really is that simple to solve this.”
SOLID Authentication from FCS verifies when people are connected to an organisations’ authentic website, helping to protect shoppers and other web users from fraudulent web sites. SOLID Authentication provides proof that a site is real, and that affiliations on a website that are designed to give consumers confidence, like security logos and safe shopping indicators, etc, are authentic.
In the case of DNS poisoning, a DNS server is hacked, and people are sent to a different, possibly fake website. The software can identify as soon as this happens, alert the owners of the real website, so that they can address the situation immediately redirecting to a safe website.
S.O.L.I.D. Authentication®, SOLID 3PV™ and SOLID 3PX™ have been developed to overcome internet security vulnerabilities such as, cyber-squatting, typo-squatting, phishing, pharming, DNS poisoning, man in the middle attacks, frame spoofing logo/brand abuse and gives protection against certificate vulnerabilities and malware.

29th March 2011 - First Cyber Security launches copyright theft protection solution at BAFTA d-media global conference.
Illegal movie downloads could be a thing of the past with First Cyber Security’s SOLID WEB™
Woking, UK. 29th March 2011 – First Cyber Security today launches its copyright protection solution at the D-Media Network global conference being held at BAFTA in Piccadilly, London.
Further expanding its data security portfolio into the film and media sector, First Cyber Security will be showcasing its security solution to protect and warn against copyright theft and brand protection in the film industry. The solution will help to solve the issue of illegal downloads of movies, which are often available before general release. The consumer regularly has hundreds of illegal download sites available to them.
Rod Pugh, Managing Director of First Cyber Security commented, “Illegal downloads cost the film industry many millions of pounds and has a huge impact on possible investment in future projects. Most consumers are honest and want to know which sites are legitimate and steer clear of illegal download sites where there is the risk of prosecution. First Cyber Security offers to bring this information to the consumer so they can surf without fear of prosecution, and when they do download a film, know it is with the consent of the copyright owner.”
The launch is in co-operation with D-Media Network, the organisation behind the BAFTA conference. Gina Fegan, Chief Executive of D-Media said “As soon as we saw this unique technology and what it could do we knew we had to be involved in bringing it to the film industry. The benefits are staggering.”
Rod Pugh added, “I’m highly encouraged by the significant interest prior to the launch and look forward to working with D-Media to help the film industry eliminate piracy and fraud.”

29th June 2010 - S.O.L.I.D. Authentication® usability tests show software significantly helps users to avoid buying fake goods at online stores
Woking, UK. 29th June 2010 UCL tests First Cyber Security’s website authentication tool.
As part of an independent project funded by the Technology Strategy Board (UK government funding agency) a team at University College London (UCL), led by Professor M. Angela Sasse investigated consumer reaction and usability of First Cyber Security’s S.O.L.I.D. Authentication® service. The report, entitled “Effective and Usable Anti-phishing and web authentication tool” has just been published. The aim of the project was to review and improve the human factors aspects of First Cyber Security’s security technology when used by consumers transacting over the Internet. S.O.L.I.D Authentication® is used by the IMRG to protect its ISIS Internet Shopping Is Safe logo which appears on all IMRG member sites.
Summary of findings
The project looked at how easy the tool was to use, and how effective it was in assisting consumers to choose safe sites to transact with on the Internet. Initial user tests led to a new version of the user interface, and the evaluation results of a further user trial are very encouraging.
The sites tested in the study had been randomly allocated a security status: 15% were set to be the “fake” sites, 46% were sites to be cautious with, and 38% were set to be the “safe” sites.
Three quarters of participants said the tool, which uses a “traffic light” system, improved their confidence in web browsing, and that they would use this software. In a controlled test where participants had to select a site to buy from, 94% of participants using S.O.L.I.D. Authentication® chose a site the tool indicated as “safe” (green status). 6% chose sites it indicated they should be cautious with (yellow or grey status). No participants chose sites S.O.L.I.D. Authentication® flagged as “fake” (red status).
Participants avoided “fake” sites because of the tool: for a group that did not use S.O.L.I.D. Authentication®, 18% chose a "fake" site, compared to none in groups where the tool was used. These results show that the S.O.L.I.D. Authentication® indicators are (1) being noticed by users, and (2) strongly guiding their decision making about which sites to buy from.
Quotes from the final report.
“After installing and using S.O.L.I.D. Authentication® at home, interviews….revealed that the majority of participants had no problems with installing the software, describing it as “easy” and “straightforward”. When describing what they liked about the software, participants commented that it was simple to use, it was informative, and it did not interfere with their web browsing.”

14th April 2010 - First Cyber Security and IMRG the e-Retail trade association make internet shopping safer.
Woking, UK. 14th April 2010 IMRG protects its Internet Shopping Is Safe (ISIS) brand online with S.O.L.I.D. Authentication® from First Cyber Security.
IMRG, the leading body for global e-commerce has selected First Cyber Security’s S.O.L.I.D.Authentication® service to protect its brand online and reduce internet fraud. This new and innovative service verifies when consumers are connected to an organisations’ authentic website, helping to protect shoppers and other web users from fraudulent web sites. In addition, First Cyber Security’s SOLID 3PV™ service, protects the IMRG Internet Shopping is Safe (ISIS) brand online. The ISIS brand shown by a logo displayed on the accredited retailer websites is dynamically verified, giving the consumer confidence that this logo has not been fraudulently copied.
“The ISIS brand was introduced in 2002 and now has the support of over 1000 e-retailers from major household names to smaller more specialised retailers. ISIS-accredited retailers now account for approximately two thirds of all UK online shopping. Use of the ISIS logo commits our members to a code of conduct when selling goods and services online.” explained Lucie Burton, the ISIS accreditation manager at IMRG. “Our research has shown that many consumers use the existence of the ISIS logo on a website and its confirmation certificate as an assurance of a reputable organisation, encouraging them to transact with the retailers displaying the logo. This makes protecting the ISIS logo online a key priority for IMRG and First Cyber Security will help us to do that.”
Fraudsters looking to make their website look more appealing copy logos and in some instances the certificates, to emulate reputable organisations and fool the consumer into buying goods or services from their sites. Often the goods never show up, if they do they are more than likely of substandard quality, leading to an unhappy consumer and reputation damage for the organisation.
Rod Pugh, MD of First Cyber Security said, “We are delighted to have IMRG as a subscriber to our service, consumers benefitting from our service will now be able to see ISIS logos validated on the fly, on over 1000 retail web sites. IMRG’s focus on representing e-retail organisations gives them an unprecedented insight into the challenges consumers face online. Fraudsters continue to employ ever more credible tactics to fool consumers into using their sites including faking certificates and claiming unapproved associations. The existence of a logo on a website designed to give consumers confidence in an association or security is no longer enough.”
Uniquely targeted to protect organisations’ digital presence, the First Cyber Security ‘SOLID’ service allows consumers to verify with just a glance that the website they are visiting is authentic and any associations claimed are real.

24th September 2009 -FCS launches unique service to protect brand identities online
Woking, UK. 24th September 2009 First Cyber Security (FCS) announce the availability of their unique SOLID 3PV™ service (Secure OnLine IDentification third party verification). The technology originally showcased at the IP risk and management forum in June is now available.
SOLID 3PV™ is a unique technology which allows website visitors to authenticate logos, pictures or references to particular companies or brands. Simply by hovering the cursor over such entities a window appears showing the logo of the brand owner. The appearance of the window and brand owners’ logo are confirmation that the brand owner has given permission for the reference to be used.
To avoid fraud the window moves across the screen, out of the browser and merges with First Cyber Security’s SOLID Authentication window, the leading consumer orientated, website verification technology.“We are delighted with the interest created from the showcase of our SOLID 3PV™ technology.
Premium brands are looking at it to reduce sales of counterfeit goods and certification markets are using it for consumers to verify continued eligibility to their approval schemes,” said Rod Pugh, MD First Cyber Security. “The recent announcement by the OFT ‘s ‘Just Tick It’ campaign concerning online ticket sale scams proves this technology is needed to ensure the consumer knows which websites are authorised by the promoters, to sell tickets online. Every year many people are duped into buying tickets from unapproved websites which not only result in them losing money, but also not being able to attend the event, for which the tickets had been purchased.”
“Brand owners lose millions of pounds every year to websites which sell counterfeit or stolen goods. Technology which gives them the ability to clearly indicate to consumers those sites which are permitted to sell genuine products clearly provides value to brand owners and consumers alike” commented Andrew McClelland, Director of Business Development at IMRG, the e-retail trade association. “This technology can also show consumers using e-retail sites whether certification marques such as, security and approved buyer schemes are being used correctly by website owners. Additionally, should any website fail to continue to meet the requirements of such approvals, the marques owners have the ability to remove this verification giving them total control over how their branding is used.”
